Hybrid treatment systems for dye wastewater are generally used. The combinations have been outlined in the literature under three broad categories i.e., combination among AOPs, combination of physico-chemical treatments among themselves and those with the AOPs and, the one with the paramount importance, the combination of biological systems with conventional physico-chemical processes and AOPs.

As to answer your question about a simple, small (craftsman), low cost and sustainable craftsman dye wastewater treatment, I would definitely recommend the well proven activated sludge (AS) biological treatment implemented in SBR after screening, equalisation and conditioning. This can be realized in a single tank with 2 compartments: (1) equalization+ conditioning and (2) AS SBR. The screens to retain textile fibers and other solids.(e;g. replaceable basket type) shall be inserted at the inlet of the equalization. This compartment shall be equipped with a mixer and a pump. Assuming that the pH of the equalized wastewater would be neutral (6 - 8) , then the only conditioning would be to add and dissolve (mixing) a bit of nutrients (N + P) for the biological treatment such as from the commonly used DAP fertilizer. Then the conditioned wastewater can be batch fed to the AS SBR compartment equipped with aeration and decanting (after full bio-oxidation, settling and clarification). A manual pH meter and DO meter (dissolved oxygen) are recommended for monitoring and correction. The unit can be semi-automatically operated by a few level switches and adjustable timers.

This simple basic biological system is supported by our in-depth assessment of 20 large textile dyeing and finishing wastewater plants in Bangladesh on behalf of the IFC (World Bank Group). Attached you can find an extract of our summary report .

Bruno Peeters for you contribution but the system youre propose it is cheap for rural  dye craftsman? and I guessed tha this system consuma lot of energy for  operating mixer and pump or perhaps its manuel system. In burkina Faso , we lack of energy and we have to design a which are really simple. Will you send  me a picture of your system ( equalization + SBR).

Unfortunately I don't have pictures of such (very) small systems; The smallest one that we designed and commissioned is 100 m³/d on chemical wastewater (attached).

Mixing: can be done manually.

Pump: a manual pump can be used similar to bore well pumps used in Africa.

Aeration: Fine bubble aeration uses a minimum of air and electrical power depending on immersion depth (minimum air + power at about 6 - 7 m). In shallow tanks, aeration systems such as used in fish ponds can be used.

As one can verify this paper along with many more just confirms my point that your de-ammonification alternative (that you just deleted) does NOT apply to textile dyeing wastewater.
