Particle Swarm Optimization, Firefly Algorithm, Gravitational Search Algorithm, Bacterial Foraging etc. are recently used by many researchers to tune PID and other controllers for a complex process and getting rid of solving complex dynamics to tune the parameter of the controller. But are they fit for all kind of tuning problems?
There are many meta heuristic algorithms. Each algorithm has its own limitations. So researchers continually try to refine them, called variants of PSO or variants of GA etc. Some researchers try to prove that one algorithm is superior than the other, etc. As I think, it is better to just apply the algorithm. Majority of the problems will be solved. I have worked with GA, PSO, and cuckoo search algorithm. One algorithm may take more time than the other. But normally they work.

I already work with several different methods for tuning PID controllers.
The challenge and the limits of the approach is the simulation model.
This kind of tunning is hard to be applied when you do not have your model to be simulated in an off-line training. This fact limits this kind of applications when you want to tune a process that is already running in the industry. Thus, people still applying fast calibration methods, like zigler nichols.
