Is anyone familiar with this issue?

 I agree with  Iyenemi that Abbatoir projects have  potentially significant effects on the environment. It has implicatioons  for  land use,  physical characteristics of land, the socio-economy, amenity, health issues and visual impact.  Considering the  vast and varied impact of  abbatoir projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, factors  that are directly linked to the impact  and implications should be considered.

These will  include 1. Presence of water environment-- Hydrology of water bodies can  be affected  by both siting, construction and operations of abbatoir. The vulnerabilty of groundwater should be considered before siting an abbatoir. Potable water could be polluted (e.g  with helminth parasites)  resulting  in serious health effects.

2.Storage and containment of abbatoir waste, fuel and potentailly toxic chemicals-- Run-off of such waste  can potentially contaminate surrounding water bodies, vegetation etc which can generate further health and environmental  problems.  Siting should consider an appropriate way to contain, store and dispose waste.  For instance, the need to cover sites with an impermeable  layer and proper drainage system will be required.

3. Extent of land required for this project is also potential factor to be considered.

4. Climatic and air factors---- The quality of air around an abbatoir site can be afected b y animal  by-products and transport within and around the site.  This could further generate visual impact such as  odour  nuisance.  Consider installing  storage and containment system that are designed to prevent this impact.   Acquisition, proper control and management of treatment plants, carcass incinerator and compostings units will be required.

5. Ecological factors--- How vegetation and surrounding flora would be impacted by abbatoir sting and operations. There is potential harm of loss of aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

6. Potential effect of sitting on human----This include visual impact e.g odour nuisance, noise, socio-economic factors. Proximity to  neighbours or residential areas should be avoided.

7. Funding, management and administration over time are also important issues to consider before sitting.

Excellent contribution Grace. I am currently mapping abattoir locations in and around the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. From our initial data gathering there appears to have been very little thought given to several of the issues you have raised. Your contribution can enhance the development of a template which can be used for a comparative analysis between different abattoirs.

I think the lack of the relevant stakeholders inclusion and participation will be an influential factors.

Also the policy supporting such project development must be overlooked.

The central abattoir, which is meant to serve all the 11 local government areas in Ibadan land, is sited on 15 hectares of land, with provisions for manual and mechanical slaughtering of cattle, pigs, goats and sheep.
