Only in September I started PhD project looking at data analytics application to heart failure data sets. From my initial literature review I have learnt that majority of predictive modelling and work in the field of ML/AI on health data are done by non-clinical teams. The conclusions drawn by non-clinical teams are in majority of cases incorrect. The models will not be applicable to clinical practice. Only minority of authors communicated their results to clinicians and ask for their input. I agree with you, it feels like a race for more publications, just for the publication, just to be accepted to the conference.....etc..... The one question data scientists need to ask is " So what?". If you think your model is better in predicting mortality in heart failure patients by 0.05 (AUC) compared to previous authors, how is this going to help those patients? How is this going to improve clinical practice? How is this relevant ?

I think COVID pandemic is a real test to data scientists sense of purpose. Can you use your knowledge in a very practical way and help prepare service for the surge of sick patients or you can write beautiful theoretical papers on models that will never see the artificial light of the clinical room.....

Before Data Scientists weren't able to understand that doing science is not only about data, they will remain doinf these insane race for publications. If a Data Scientist understand that, he/she can understand a lot about data, machine learning, statistics, it is still required a partnership with "the other side of the moon", i.e. those who understand the real meaning of dealing with coronavirus or any other possible clinical outbreak. My advice for those already publishing about COVID-19 only reporting results based on data without the proper clinical motivation and support: STOP !!!

I'm new to the research world but I'm doing some studies on the tendering market. For now I've seen that all the information that was being published everyday is now on halt.

That means there will be at least a month of no new data, but we will see how it is after that. Maybe all the new tenders will be x2 the regular amount, or it could also be that it will need some time to get back to the normal pace.

Anyways, I will try to take this "opportunity" to analize the impact of COVID-19 in tenders.

Listen, I'll be clear with you: I spent nights and nights predicting the behavior of this COVID 19 using almost all of the machine learning tools. But I get very very very bezard results. I made only one observation: the statistics displayed on COVID19 (new cases, deaths) on the websites are completely incorrect !!!!!! I am now working on a complex model which takes into account hidden information. Furthermore, I would remain open for any cooperation in this sense.

Yes, definitively ML and AI can be applied to better understand the Covid-19 pandemic. Data Scientists or ML Engineers can come up with good visualization solutions, predictions and so on.

Yes, ML, AI and Data Science can be used to better understand the COVID-19 epidemic. What types of data do you want to use? if it's a text document then you can analyze the sentiment of data for better understanding (using the NPL process). if it is image data then you can predict COVID-19 positive or negative If you have enough data.

Yes, of-course there is an impact, research and development will slow to a maximum extent. Industries or investors may not put effort to grow same. This will pause our effort for another 2-3 years !

I think the most important point to make recommendations on how to relax the lockdown in the long term in country-wide and local scales since the current understanding can't make us fully optimistic:

1. We never created a vaccine against a coronavirus before.

2. Exposure to other coronaviruses doesn't end up long-term immunity (e.g. common cold).

3. We can't eliminate the virus from the Earth since it will circulate in Africa and other places in the long run (if we don't have a vaccine).

So we need to concentrate on relaxing-tightening the social distancing over time and control local outbreaks. Deaths are sad, but we can't let the society to collapse at all cost. AI can help to lower the damages.

As per my study, there is being accelerated research in AI on the context of COVID-19. Companies like BenevolentAI have been researching on drug discovery using AI. Generative Adversarial Networks(GAN) is being used to discover the possible drug/vaccine for COVID19.

After the release of dataset of Protein structure of SARS-CoV-2 by Google DeepMind, there has been high-end simulations to study and predict the protein structure of COVID19 accurately. There are also multiple object-detection projects to predict and detect the Pneumonia caused by COVID19 using the X-Ray and CT-Scan datasets. Platforms like Kaggle have conducted the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset Challenge (CORD-19) to excite the researchers all over the world to come up with some novel AI solutions.

For all the high-end AI simulations and GANs, independent researchers use Colab and Kaggle GPU and TPU. Furthermore, NVIDIA has made its platform 'Parabricks' free for 90 days for COVID19 research.

I feel that the practice/demand/market of AI research has increased further with the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19.

I believe that through technology surveillance systems that still respect privacy and personal liberties, it is possible that with reliable data management AI agents can be used to analyse breakouts of infectious disease to support risk and resource analyses for government agencies, healthcare service providers and medical professionals.

Interesting question and very interesting responses. I am from Africa and most countries here are underdeveloped in terms of AI, ML, Data Science or big data, however COVID-19 is a global pandemic. More than developed countries, Africa health care will suffer more, resulting in high moralities; however my answer is generic.

Firstly, AI currently is playing the role of processing large amounts of data, reducing spread and treatment of ill patients according to Oren Etzion, CEO of AI2. Secondly AI is bringing researchers together to find potential treatments, as @Shadikur Rahman has shown in his comment on kaggle. Lastly, believe these tools (AI, ML, Data Science) are in time going to to increase the efficiency from literature based discoveries leading to informed vaccines and controls assuming our MLs are more accurately predictive.

I believe the changes currently happening because of COVID-19 shows the need for AI and Data Science. For example, the testing of a large number of samples, interring extensive data, interpreting results using AI and other applications.

AI and DATA SCIENCE will get high status in post COVID phase
