But at the same time its susceptibility towards pest and diseases and high nutrient requirement is also a major challenge. Under organic farming control of many pest and diseases through organic pest control methods as well as bio-control agent is really a difficult task. Also, slow release of different nutrients from organic manures creates stress during peak requirement of nutrient in the rice crop.

Indian Basmati rice exports face stiff competition in international markets, many of such problems have roots in the production of Basmati Rice in India as follows: 1. Cost of Indian Basmati rice in the international market is much higher compared to that in other countries in the world. 2. Tax on rice exports, such as sales tax (indirect export), Rural Development Fund, market costs, administrative charges, etc is high in Indian states while the same policy is relatively smoother in Pakistan. 3. Government of India has annually increased the minimum support price (MSP) for non -Basmati paddy. 4. Lack of adequate infrastructural facilities is prominent for processing, storage, transportation, etc. 5. Production costs are rising due to the increase in input costs. 6. Producers of rice receive export subsidies and incentives in other countries, which reduces production costs. Therefore, in other countries, exports enjoy more competitive advantage in international markets. 7. Indian Basmati rice is fragrance faces certain problems and creates reluctance amid customers when compared to traditional Basmati aroma and taste. 8. Lack of appropriate arrangements is observed in production of sufficient quantities of quality seeds for planting rice for target markets. 9. Completely modern rice mills should be established to ensure high milling recovery and reduce the percentage of broken Basmati rice. 79 10. Critical absence of pure seeds of Basmati varieties is widely seen to yield genetic variation in plant height, grain size and proper maturity of the products. 11. Post-harvest handling is another important defect where, farmers harvest their crop with high moisture content and maintain it for a longer period which does not impair the flavor. India faces major constraints in rice production, e.g., land, fertilizers, water, labor, pesticides and insecticides, and even lack of quality germ-plasm, frequently intensified by environmental impacts on agriculture leading to serious damage and stress. In India, problems / constraints, linked to rice production, vary from state to state and from region to region.
The major challenge is getting a premium price in the market. The export demand almost remains around 40 million tonnes, although last year the export was around 44 million tonnes. The area has to be regulated so that price remains stable.
The challenges are multifold:
1. The major geographical area under basmati rice cultivation has increasingly mechanized farming, with smaller number of livestock. Therefore, availability of compost and other organic manures is very limited.
2. A large number of pests and diseases in rice attack and multiply rapidly, therefore, the biological control agents and cultural practices, that by nature being slow acting, are unable to give high degree of control compared to pesticides.
3. In most of the basmati growing area Rice-Wheat cropping system is practiced, both being cereals, need for nutrient replenishment is high, which is difficult to meet though organic manures.
4. There are speciecies of root-knot nematodes, especially Meloidogyne graminicola and in some areas also Meloidogyne triticoryzae, that are major soil-borne, little known but serious pests of rice completing 3-4 generations in rice roots and can also infect and complete one or two generations on also on wheat. This provides continuous food supply to these nematodes. The rice crops suffer very severly and productivity falls. There are no very efficient and fast acting non-chemical methods of nematode control.
5. In general the per unit area production of organic rice is high, enough differential price is not available in national and international markets. The current market for organic basmati rice is not big enough to induce the producers to take the risk.
@Hem C Joshi, no doubt that organic farming plays a major role in improving soil and environmental quality but as it is well known that Basmati Rice is heavy feeder. Availability of nutrients in the form of organic manures, biocontrol of pest and diseases and availability of premium price of the product in market are some of the major concern among organic basmati growers.
