I studied visual arts at the Bachellor's and Master's level, and now teach in an art department in a Mexican public university. I like to tell my students that a good strategy for survival is to find a way to serve others with their artistic abilities and knowledge. Productive engagement with specific sectors of society usually leads to situations where an artist can put her/his skills to good use and people will be willing to provide for her/his sustenance. This can be done in an infinite number of ways, depending on the artist and her/his context.

I suggest you a reading that was really inspiring to me when I first approached cultural economics and the art management. Hans Abbing, Why are artists poor. Once you have read this book there are many other suggestions, so, let's keep in touch.

I did some research on artists' obstacles in doing arts. They are published in my PhD thesis, uploaded here on RG.

Their are some interviews with practising artists, mostly complaining about their effort to make for the administrative stuff that take more than 50 percent of their job. Concretely they need support for preparing their canvas, marketing issues, tax, and sales....
