I want to know about the different methods to study microbial populations in soil. Microbial population means taxonomy, what type of microorganisms are present in soil up to genus level. Kindly suggest me some literature and techniques that can be used. Thanks.
In the UK there was a major research programme on 'Soil Biodiversity'. About 30 different research projects were conducted on a small area of upland grassland - the aim was to understand how so many different groups of organisms co-existed and interacted within the soil. Many of these research studies related to microbial populations.
The research yielded a considerable number of papers in a variety of journals. However, a collection of 9 papers, which were refereed and which summed up the research programme, were published in Applied Soil Biology, volume 33, part 2, pages 99-219, in September 2006. These provide an introduction to many techniques and references which can be followed up.
