The difference between the two material structures lies in the difference between the conduction parameters in them. The nanorods may have better mobility along the rods.
As they are partially ordered structures the nano rods may have more lifetime for minority carrier and less recombination rate. The nano particles has much larger grain boundaries leading to smaller mobility and lifetime of minority carriers. So, the rods are better provided that the metallic contacts must be normal to the rods such that the current flows along the rods which is the easy direction.
