Role satisfaction is the degree to which there is agreement between peoples roles and other aspects of their personal and social lives. Examples would include:

Job satisfaction

Life satisfaction

Marital satisfaction

Relationship satisfaction

From an internal point of view someone might experience low role satisfaction being a teacher if the level of classroom discipline does not meet their own standards. From an interpersonal perspective someone may feel very satisfied with their role as teacher, as this is what their parents wanted them to be.

Role strain - difficulty experienced by an individual when incompatible behavior, expectations, or obligations

Role distress -Employees who face high emotional demand and conflicting roles are more likely to report psychological distress—placing them at higher risk of mental health disorders and reduced productivity

Role satisfaction - is derived out of activities which drive their performance and achieve the desired results.

Thanks, everyone, for all of these answers. I know I wasn't the one asking the question, but still, I found myself reading almost everything... Silvio,I especially appreciated the first PDF that you shared... I found some of the information in it to match with what I have been learning.  In terms of social psychology or I guess, even sociology as I understand it role satisfaction role strain and role distress can be observed even within the nuclear family unit. Granted, at the time these ideas were first expressed, society (western society I mean) was pretty conservative over all... Well even sexist, in some (some might day many) ways... So in the family unit one would experience role satisfaction when one was confident and knowledgeable about what was expected of him or her and her out she was able to acceptably perform those expectations.

For example, the traditional house wife (homemaker) would be expected to be very involved in the day to day raising of the children in much of the housework and in cooking meals and providing an inviting atmosphere when the breadwinner (husband) returned home from a hard days'work... He would experience role satisfaction, knowing that he (yes, I'm using very sexist language understandnd.... This is not my theory lol) had put in time at work in order to pay the bills necessary for the home to exist. Children would experience role satisfaction when they did their homework, attended school diligently and pretty much did as they were told. Yes, a very simplistic and functionalist viewpoint one with which I am not in agreement, but a simple enough example to give a decent idea about how for one, role strain can come about.

Let's imagine for minute, that the breadwinner (husband but nowadays likely both wife and husband) loses his job.... Now the homemaker must work part time while the breadwinner is looking for a new job. The homemaker will experience role strain as she (or he, of course) must still keep up the traditional role which is expected of him or her within the family while at the same time attempting to take on another role... Hence role strain. Now, let's also imagine that the (now former) breadwinner is having great difficulty finding another job...

There will be role distress as this person is no longer providing for the family sees his or her partner working twice as hard and feels like a failure.... Additionally from (again) a functionalist viewpoint the children will also be affected negatively by all of this and as functionalists crave homeostasis, ever desiring every social unit, whether macro or micro to necessarily seek some type of unknown and unseen balance (based on the human body's physiological ability to find and establish homeostasis), and all family members will now be experiencing role distress......

Okay... Yes, the above ian incredibly simplistic ( and blatantly sexist) example... But I have found it to be, at least, a good method of understanding the differences between role satisfaction role strain and role distress... Please anyone feel free to correct me where I am incorrect... I am simply an under grad, and learning these things as I go along.... :)

Stress has two positive and negative dimensions, the positive dimension of which is the Ustress, and its negative dimension is called Distress..

Distress means negative and destructive stress, the strain is the results and negative consequences of distress.

And anxiety is one of the consequences of distress. Not synonymous, so anxiety is a strain rather than distress.
