I need more details about esterification and transesterification of vegetable oils. Esterification reaction is mostly used for reducing the FFA level of oil and then followed transesterifiaction reaction for converting fatty acid into fatty acid methyl esters. Some of the people are following esterification process for producing fatty acid methyl esters.
Esterification
ROH + R'-COOH -> R'COOR acid with alcohol gives ester.
Transesterification
ROH + R'COOR'' -> R'COOR change of alkyl group present with R'COO by using a alcohol.

according to your answer, esterification process can be carried out only with acid group of fatty acid. the transesterification reaction can be carried out in existing ester compounds of previous step of esterification. so both process can be occur for biodiesel production from vegetable oils.

Actually transesterification reaction basically alkaline esterification, acid esterification term used when use acid catalyst, and during acid esterification some fatty acid also converted into the esters but it depends on the condition and nature of the feed stock. If you use the heterogeneous acid catalyst than no need to do transesterification.

Sir, When FFA (Free Fatty Acid) value is high (i.e More than 2) esterification reaction has to take place followed by trans esterification, it is called two step process. if the the value of FFA is less than 2 only tranesterification process alone can be carried out (one step process)
