I would like to draw a diagram of the performances of the known LAN, MAN and WAN networks based on the technologies used, the standards, the distance reached and the capacities. I know someone could answer about the wireless context. Is it possible to give me more informations in the context of optical fiber also? Please help ! Thank you all :)
A LAN (local area network) is a group of computers and network devices connected together, usually within the same building. By definition, the connections must be high speed and relatively inexpensive (e.g., token ring or Ethernet). Most Indiana University Bloomington departments are on LANs.
A LAN connection is a high-speed connection to a LAN. On the IUB campus, most connections are either Ethernet (10 Mbps) or Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps), and a few locations have Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) connections.
A MAN (metropolitan area network) is a larger network that usually spans several buildings in the same city or town. The IUB network is an example of a MAN.
A WAN (wide area network), in comparison to a MAN, is not restricted to a geographical location, although it might be confined within the bounds of a state or country. A WAN connects several LANs, and may be limited to an enterprise (a corporation or an organization) or accessible to the public. The technology is high speed and relatively expensive. The Internet is an example of a worldwide public WAN.

Thanks for your contribution. You know dear Tapan P Gondaliya, I thought that due to the use of optical fiber in WAN or MAN, the capacity and transmission distance in the WAN will be higher than MAN. But it seems that is not the case and then every people explains or defines the MAN or the WAN in the case of câble copper or wireless field.

Why are fiber-optic systems revolutionizing telecommunications? Compared to conventional metal wire (copper wire), optical fibers provide:
- Digital signals: Optical fibers are ideally suited for carrying digital information, which is especially useful in computer networks.
- Higher carrying capacity: Because optical fibers are thinner than copper wires, more fibers can be bundled into a given-diameter cable than copper wires. This allows more phone lines to go over the same cable or more channels to come through the cable into your business or home.

I understand all of this. May be my question is not really clear. I would like someone to give me a specific values of data rate and distance covering of both LAN, MAN and WAN with the fact that fiber optic could give good performance than the known data from Wireless (LAN, MAN and WAN).
