Solid waste management in cities have become a huge task for municipal authorities. In view of this community based management systems are being looked at for reducing the burden on city Administration.
Let me tell you that one of the most important solid waste management practices is the landfills, specifically production of Methane gas for Electrical Energy Production. Please refer to the following link:-
You may wish to refer to some city examples under the 'Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment', a major UN network (sponsored by Japan) spanning about 60 cities across Asia Pacific, which I evaluated for UN some years ago. https://kitakyushu.iges.or.jp/. Community waste management was and, I believe, still is major focus and cities shared their experiences. e.g. Municipality of Nonthaburi, Bangkok (which I recall was especially active at community level) shared with Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Your research on successful community solid waste management practices followed in various parts of the world, is a vast subject.
You need to work on source segregation, and totally aware of the various components that make up the waste. It is best dealt with on bio and non-bio modes. And next will be usable, and disposable, and some to be done with caution etc..
Solid waste management in cities, even though are a huge task and burden on municipal authorities, are to be viewed as commercial / beneficial project mode practices, All outputs / compost and reusable wastes are dealt with commercial benefits. If cities' waste-management is not done prudently, urban- mounts tend to become a reality, as it exists at most urbans, on its peripheries, providing all bad EIAs etc.. w wishes..
