Looking back at how I started in Washington University, I was very quiet and very shy also. After graduation, I continued at the same University, and got assigned a good course "Matrix Algebra" for undergraduate students. For the first lecture, I stood outside the class, and planned to start the lecture after students would sit inside the class. The classes got cancelled due to bad weather (snow). Next day's classes also got cancelled and a notice was put in the Department notice board. Third day, I decided to wait inside the class. Just a few students were there, and one student named Sutanit Puttapanom (from Thailand) asked me, "Hi, when will the instructor come?" I was taken aback and replied slowly, "I am the instructor!" She was taken aback! "Are you sure?" I did not know what to reply, "I think so!" She agreed to her fate. "OK!" She settled with a big cup of chocolate. This is how my academic profession started. It took me several years of practice, self-correction and preparations to overcome my limitations. We return now to the subject! What are the challenges of being a new faculty member? Not only in teaching - but also in research and other expectations! Thank you! With best wishes, Sundar
