The main purpose of nano powder sintering is retention of inital nano crystalline structure in the final stage.There is varying opinion whether the basic mechanisms for sintering of nano crystalline powder is similar to conventional powders.The major question is wether the physics of sintering process in nano scale particles is size scale dependent.It is necessary to pay more attention on nano structured composites.
Surely the sintering kinetics mechanism will differ wrt particle size. However, one can inhibit the growth the particle undergoing sintering. This will thus enable one to retain the size dependent properties. Spark plasma sintering is one such option to arrest the growth of the particle

Dual hydroxyapatite and titania coating was developed on titanium strip with single step by simple brush coating method. Sintering was done at 950 °C. The resultant coating was analyzed for Ca/P ratio, coating surface morphology by SEM, X-ray diffraction, Adhesion test. Uniform hydroxyapatite/titania coating was formed on metal
surface after sintering. Scanning electron micrographs showed dense and crack free coating. EDAX analysis showed 1.66 Ca/P ratio, X-ray diffraction study gave peaks both for titanium dioxide and hydroxyapatite. A nanocrystalline ZrO2–spinel composite with an average grain size of smaller than 100 nm can be synthesized by high-energy ball-milling followed by spark plasma sintering. Sintering of nanopowders generally should be enhanced comparing to conventional coarsed-particles materials. However, nanopowders are mainly consisted of submicrometer agglomerates that hinders full potential of nanosintering. One of the point I would like to stress is that sintering of nanopowders has to be considered from the point of view of the nature of single nanporaticle surface, its boundary/interior regions, local crystallinity and chemistry of the specific materials to be studied. Full control and process understanding are required to develop materials with desired microstructures.
