Experiences can vary widely among groups. You might consider exploring the beliefs and experiences of mothers through an ethnographic study. You can follow women prospectively from pregnancy until weaning using interviews, participant observation, and artifact assessment. Pregnant women can change their infant feeding decisions over the course of time and it would be valuable to capture the nuances of the process. I did a similar study on a population with low breastfeeding rates and both formula feeding and breastfeeding women provided valuable insights.
