May I recommend you the lecture of this paper: The role of systemic inflammatory biomarkers to predict mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Expert Review of Respiratory Medicine, February 2013, Vol. 7, No. 1 , Pages 57-64
COPD is the fourth most common cause of death in the world, it is predicted to rise to the third position by the year 2020 (Kelly et al., 2013). Many biomarkers can predict mortality in COPD particularly serum inflammatory biomarkers because inflammation is thought to play a pivotal role in the genesis of this pathology. C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6, pulmonary and activation-regulated chemokine (PARC), surfactant protein-D (SP-D), fibronectin have been observed to be independently associated with increased risk of death. Other systemic molecules that have been shown to have a role in predicting cardiovascular mortality have been investigated as potential predictors of mortality in COPD such as Adrenomedullin, troponin T (hs-cTnT), Adiponectin.
