Depends upon the guidelines of journals you want to publish in. refrences need to be arranged that way. for quick changes you can use softwares like Mendeley, endnote, zotero etc.
Organizing references in an academic journal manuscript is crucial for clarity, credibility, and adherence to the specific citation style required by the journal. There are best practices that a writer should put under consideration;
First a Citation Style, Different journals have different preferred citation styles such as., APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard.
One should make sure to follow the specific guidelines provided by the journal.
Secondly, Use Reference Management Software, Tools like Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley, or RefWorks can help you organize and format your references automatically. They also facilitate easy insertion of citations into your manuscript.
Thirdly, follow proper Formatting,
Ensure consistency in formatting throughout your references suchas., italicizing book titles, using proper abbreviations for journal names.
Fouth, alphabetical Order; Arrange references alphabetically by the last name of the first author. If there is no author, use the first significant word of the title.
Fifthly, pay attention to Details, Double-check author names, publication years, titles, and page numbers for accuracy.
Sixthy, In-Text Citations; ensure that in-text citations correspond accurately to the full citations in your reference list.
Sevethy, properly Cite Different Types of Sources, for example;
Books: Include author(s), publication year, book title, publisher.Journal Articles: Include author(s), publication year, article title, journal name, volume, page numbers.
Websites: Include author(s), publication date (if available), webpage title, URL.
Conference Papers: Include author(s), publication year, paper title, conference name, location, page numbers.
Eigthy, Check Journal Guidelines, some journals have specific requirements for certain types of sources or unique rules for their citation style.
Ninthy, use hanging indentation; for each reference entry, the first line should align with the left margin, and subsequent lines should be indented or hanging indent.
Tenthy, proofread; after compiling your reference list, proofread it carefully to ensure accuracy and consistency.
For instance; APA Style, In-Text Citation:
(Smith, 2019)(Johnson & Lee, 2020)
(Brown et al., 2018)
Reference list;
Brown, A., Jones, B., & Lee, C. (2018). Title of the Book. Publisher.
Johnson, D., & Lee, E. (2020). Title of the Article. Journal Name, 10(2), 100-120.Smith, J. (2019).
Title of the Journal Article.
Journal Name, 5(1), 50-65.
So by following these guidelines will not only make the writer’s manuscript look more professional but also make it easier for readers and reviewers to find and verify your sources. I think this will help the researchers on how to organize references about journals, I beg to submit, and I wish you Goodluck.
I would tend to agree with Dr Shoaib Mohammad and Dr Ambar Mani Mishra that it really depends on the specific journal requirements. It has been a problem for me before that if one journal rejects my manuscript, I often have to do a different format for another journal.
I would say, though, that I have found Endnote was not correct one time - the style they wanted to do was NOT that which was required by the journal I wanted to send the manuscript to, so please check before sending!
