Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium), often called "mother of cacao" in English, is a fantastic tree for providing dispersed shade (to protect crops in the tropical lowlands from the already excessive and increasing heat of climate change), because it can be planted right in farmers' fields, pruned once a year while one is standing on the ground, provide firewood, dry season cattle fodder, an excellent rodenticide and even human food (the flowers). Furthermore, it grows into a full-size tree and starts producing seeds after only four to five years from seedlings or cuttings, and is amazingly resistant to poor soils and even droughts. It is already fairly widely used in the tropical areas of Latin America, Africa and Asia. PDFA plantation or a forest may be a “source” or a “sink” of carbon depending on the volume and relative density of the tree species, microbial load of the soil and climatic condition of the area. So a project was framed to know the stored carbon in different tree species inhabiting Konnagar Municipality area.
Gravellia is very good. The leaves decompose and add soil organic matter hence supporting soil biodiversity. The trees can provide firewood and timber to support livelihoods.
In DR Congo there'is some species who are the best Trees outside forests (TOFs) that helps in biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration and promoting rural livelihood such as Mango, Avocado and Safari trees in my view.
