How can we become more sustainable in both the pre- and post-harvest horticultural sectors. What is being done and what can be done to improvise the footprint.
1) Freeze drying of convenient items ( not all) can mitigate the problem to an extent.
2) Simple processing of raw harvest at production centres, which can be made ready for direct consumer consumption. This will expose the culturists to processing & the bio wastes can be used as organic manure for their culture fields.
3) I have also observed that horticultural products farmed using manures have a better shelf life as compared to those farmed with inorganic fertilizers.
Sustainability involves taking a holistic perspective to understand the true short-term and long-term impacts of a business activity. Life cycle thinking has emerged as a useful tool in sustainability to consider the total impacts of an activity, product, or service from its origin to its end. This differs from conventional business practices in which the focus has traditionally been on more immediate factors, such as cost, quality, and availability in the supply chain. Life cycle thinking still takes into account these factors but considers them over a product’s lifetime. While conventional business practices have given limited consideration to disposal costs, life cycle thinking considers the impacts of disposal to be an important part of the overall process of product or service provision.
Hi Charles Vincent . Thanks for your response. These days, horticultural produce spend a reasonable amount of time in cold storage to assure year round supply for the consumers. We need to address this time and unsure of how to shorten the supply chain. Lets keep in touch on this.
Dear Chandravadan Trivedi. Thanks for your comments. Freeze drying in the case of kiwifruit or apples are not viable options while berries are quite popular without affecting their antioxidant contents. Agreed to your second point of utilizing the biowastes. The third point is intriguing and I wish to discuss more and keep in touch with you. By the way, I am also a GAU product same as you sir. Thank you.
Dear Dr Ari Happonen . Thanks for sending the links. I know my question was too generic - I want all of us to think on the following aspects of sustainability,
1) Using less power in coolstores. Avoiding 'leaks' of temperatures.
