I think the classification is mostly dependent on the particular experiment you are carrying out (or planning to do so). In some of experiments a 100*50 nm sample could be a considered as a ribbon (say for a well resolver ballistic transport measurements), while in others can be regarded as infinite planes (for adsobtion of atoms, e.g.) end so on.
