we are all familiar with the circular microstrip patch antenna and but what happens if we make the ground plane circular instead of the reradiating patch.
The design equation for the ground plane is actually Wg=6h+W and Lg=6h+L, now what is the design equation of the ground plane if I want to make a circular ground plane ? And what difference would I get if I have two identical patch antenna but one having rectangular ground plane and the other circular ground plane?

you may not get proper reflection coefficient.
Front to back ratio is also effected (decreases).
It will also effect on gain (reduces).
Efficiency increases slightly.
Because, in case of full rectangular ground, the surface waves are reflected completely towards forward direction. In case of circular ground, only few surface waves are sent due to less coverage as bottom layer.
The above answer is mainly valid for planar monopole (micro strip line with inset feeding) antennas. In case of coaxial feeding antennas, the results may degrade slightly.
You got an different idea. So, just implement the design.
In case of circular patch:
1) It is to find feed point (it is on a radius)
2) It occupy less space as compare to rectangula
Ground patch also could be circular (about 20 % higher radius), How ever it can depend upon how stringent the back log specifications are. It can have same size as patch has, if back lobe is not very stringent
The shape of the ground plane don't have impact on the performance of the antenna.
The impact is related to the size of the ground plane.
Actually, the effect of taking ground plane either circular or rectangular, doesn't effect so much to the antenna performance. only the problem is that, you will have to be very specific to chose your length and width of the ground plane, because for lesser dimension, the surface radiation will be high and feeding point should be basically inset feeding. sometimes coaxial feeding may create problems toward ground plane.
