The information environment in which modern libraries operate is becoming increasingly complex. Library staff therefore are faced with the challenge of upgrading their skills. Accordingly, librarians must equip themselves with technological skills that will be useful for their jobs. There is a great need for digital competencies among librarians working in libraries for developing and managing digital libraries, and for staying relevant in the twentyfirst century information environment.
As you mentioned about Big data, as per my viewpoint, library housekeeping data or institutional repository(e.g. circulation data or e-resource usage) can be one of the possible things that exist. In such circumstances, software and data skills (familiar with data mining, cleaning messy data, FAIR data, ERM, RDM) are highly required.
