We are working in stabilization and rehabilitation of deep Yamuna and Chambal ravines through bamboo planting. At present we have only one bamboo species which is coming well in these harsh condition. But due to limited use of this species marketing may be a big problem. Hence if you know or having experience in growing bamboo in these areas than suggest few new species/genera which have multiple uses and can grow in ravine beds and also in steep slopes.

I'm so sorry that I were not a expert in Bamboo because you know that I have been studying forest ecosystem. However, in my opinion, it should be careful for introducing a non native species in case leading to ecological big problem.

If you are working in the Himalayan part of the Yamuna, Arundinaria is the obvious choice. I agree with Xiaodong Yan, that exotic species should not be introduced for stabilization and rehabilitation when the only real justification is economic. I would try and put back the original vegetation, that is best suited to the area. One cannot have one's cake and eat it too, in the sense of expecting a cash crop to restore ecosystem functions...
Sir, You should try to evaluate species like B.balcooa, B. nutans, B. vulgaris and D. hamiltonii in ravine beds. All the species have performed very well throughout the country in a NMBA funded multilocation trial. The paper has been published in Indian J. of Agroforestry vol 16(1): 68-73.

Dear Dr Peter I am working in the stretch of Yamuna in U.P. from mathura to Allahabad stretch at present up to Etawa which is SI arod type. I don't think it will be suitable for that. Regarfs

I am not much concerned about the exact ecology of bamboos growing in your areas but I did some work on hill bamboos. Being a forest ecologist , I think that you should survey the sites which bamboo species are growing better in your working areas, thereafter you decide about new ones. As there are large number of bamboo species having economic importance of raw materials such as Dendrocalamus hamiltonii, Bambusa tulda, Bambusa vulgaris, Bambusa bamboos, Ochlandra travancorica and Gigantochloa robstrata that can be selected for planting, which requires proper assessment of site conditions of the area.

Here I have to work in semi arid part of U.P. climate is extreme cold during winter (0oC) and extreme hot (49o C) in summer every year with average rainfall of 500 mm and soil is very light sandy loam type. The only species growing in the area is only Dandrocalamus strictus. I will try species suggested by you on trial basis. Thanks once again.
