I have seen green spaces being created in Canadian, Belgian cities. These green spaces serve as recreational spaces, contribute to the clean air ( CO2) and are refuges for animals and in particular, to birds. Is it possible to create these spaces in poor countries? What are the strategies to guarantee the biological diversity?
Understanding the biodiversity to a poor population, is needed an alternative: the availability of the food. In our paper (Kisasa, R., Palata, J.Cl, & Pwema,V., 2004. Premiers essais d’élevage du rat-taupe (Cryptomys mechowi, Rongeur : Bathyergidae) à Kinshasa, République Démocratique du Congo. Tropicultura, 22 (4) : 180-184.) , we initiated the first breeding of wild animal . But how the poor populations can cohabit with the pigeons (as in Belgium or in Italy), the squirrels and the roe deers (as in Canada)n the middle of the city? The politics of the country seems to me the major element in this project. Best wishes.
Nairobi has natural areas in and near the city, but with a rapidly growing population there are constant threats due to rising land values and increasing isolation. These areas are unlikely to be important biodiversity areas for individual species, but can serve as examples of nature for urban populations with limited chances to see the biodiversity in more rural areas, and thus increase biodiversity awareness.
