I am hearing impaired, and I am working on my pre-proposal for my dissertation. I am shying away from interviews because of my disability, but I realized there is no way around it. So far, I will be conducting interviews, collecting photo narratives, and .... that is where I am stuck. I can't do focus- group because that is too many people to have to talk at once. Help please, any tips or ideas would be great!
With the virus-related shut down, most forms of face-to-face interviewing are highly limited. One option you might consider is using a series of email exchanges as the basis for your interviews. Another possibility is to work with the automated captioning (subtitling) that is now available with Zoom.
Have you considered online fora? Some platforms even offer the opportunity to run focus groups online, which can be more manageable than f-2-f if you have someone to help you.
Hi Cynthia, this is a difficult question to answer without knowing your research topic. However, what comes to my mind is the use of non-verbal techniques such as observation, reflective essays (or accounts), diaries, photo essays or photo novela, some projective techniques such as sentence or story completion, word or/and image association (or picture response) and the collage and drawing techniques. Otherwise you may also find a lot of secondary data online (text and images) which may be combined (or triangulated) with other types of data... there are many options actually... all good wishes.
