EBG is not new neither Meta materials (MM) but due to ability of providing negative permittivity and/or negative permeability MM is gaining huge popularity in research community. It provides various benefits starting from size reduction of microwave components to high gains in antennas etc.
We are pushing hard into spatially variant EBGs and metamaterials. We are able to "bend" lattices rather abruptly without changing the size and shape of the unit cells, which could destroy the properties of the lattice. This let's us do a lot of things that are otherwise impossible. We found that we can sculpt the near-field of devices by embedding them in spatially variant anisotropic metamaterials. We are doing this to isolate microwave components that are in very close proximity. We have also demonstrated that we can spatially vary a self-collimating lattice to control waves. We are now working on this at optical frequencies to control light very abruptly with low index materials.
