I'm interested in hearing from other child protection professionals about the risk of abused/neglected children becoming abusive/neglectful parents. I'd like a range of examples from different countries and cultures, and would ideally like to have examples of both sides of the coin (i.e. parents with aAskdverse childhood experiences who demonstrate positive parenting practices as well as those who demonstrate high risk or abusive parenting practices). As recent as possible.
Two typical examples we use are: the risk of becoming a bully or be bullied at school, recurrent fights with brothers/sisters or kids at schools.
You might want to look at Drs.Moffitt and Caspi who have done extensive longitudinal research on individuals from high risk backgrounds. Their website has a list of their publications: http://www.moffittcaspi.com/
See attached draft of a blog I prepared and which is about to be posted. In short, the Predictive Risk Model project in New Zealand found that the greatest predictors of maltreatment, after poverty were previous history of maltreatment of parents. Hi Philip, Thank you for your link! I actually worked for DCCSDS for 3 1/2 years as a CSO on the IA/IPA team before moving to Mongolia, so I found the article very interesting. I have used references to the presence of CP history for the parent in my manual, and SDM tools have made appearances, so I'm looking now for more direct empirical data confirming my assumption. Something from government/NGO sectors regarding the likelihood of a parent who had experienced abuse/neglect being assessed as having gone on to do the same to their own children. You could follow some of the refs in my thesis or go to the Children's Research Center website - they have copies of articles and reports about the data they used to develop SDM - which would include specific data about maltreated parents going on to maltreat their own children.
