It appears that electrocoagulation is one good, simple, consistant process to reduce COD. Biological methods are not so easy to get results, difficult to start, can not be relied for sudden loads.
Electrocoagulation can handle the loads and is more consistant. But why it is not followed by Industry at large. ?

Electrocoagulation need the presence of highly TDS values in the industrial effluent, high stirring rate, small distance between electrodes which produce small quantities of treated water, and finally, the electrodes may corrode.

Electrocoagulation requires electrodes to feed the current into the solution. Unfortunately, the process of coagulation is an intensive one, and places a lot of strain on the electrodes themselves, resulting in wear and tear.

Most of the researchers use a single pollutant (pollutant approach) in an EC batch lab-scale experiment. However, pilot-scale implication (wastewater as a whole approach) is needed.
The application of EC on actual wastewater samples is necessary because they are complex, reducing the efficiency of EC.
EC can be used to treat a wide variety of wastewaters, including commercial, residential, rural, and pharmaceutical wastewaters. Furthermore, EC effectively separates heavy metals, micropollutants, and dyes from different types of wastewaters.
Major Problems are
i) issue of passivation,
ii) the total cost of the EC operation, a more efficient electrode configuration is also needed.
iii) conductivity and energy consumption.
