I am considering doing some research on the etymological origins of certain words related to student government and student leadership, particularly words such as "student", "pupil", etc., to apply these contexts to political and education studies on the topic. As etymology is outside my areas of focus, I am looking for ideal approaches to integrate these etymologies in an interdisciplinary capacity. For example, should I just look at encyclopedias and dictionaries that show the roots of words, or are there particular etymological resources such as academic journals and books that delve into etymologies of specific words in more detail?

Etymologies are particularly given, as you said, in dictionaries and encyclopedias; other sources will depend upon them in dealing with such an issue. What İ recommend is to look not at a single dictionary or encyclipedia in investigating the origin of a certain word, but at a number of such sources, at least four.İn this way you will be able to look at the different phases of meaning of a certain expression through history.

I would add to this good advice, once you have identified the origin of the word and its entry into in the national language, to consult even a brief history of the language to understand the social and human context of its entry.
