The e-learning stands for electronic learning and is called as an umbrella term for terms such as online learning, synchronized and non-scychronized learning. However, all those terms are associated with distance education. Harran University Distance Education Implementation and Research Center (HARUZEM) prepared a online course on teaching English for preparing students for national exams such as YDS and YÖKDİL, including three strategies, differing form other similar courses: pronunciation, morphology and etymology. However, many teachers may think that these strategies are not necessary or essential because exams such as YDS and YÖKDİL are aimed to measure the grammar and vocabulary knowledge of students in English.

PRONUNCIATION:

First, we know that the vocabulary is the critical part of exams such as YDS and YÖKDİL. Therefore, students are forced to memorize English words as much as they can. However, many courses does not or want to teach pronunciation to their students for those exams? Because of this, many students had to memorize all words in visual without using their verbal skills. Students never differentiate the words such as "ship" and "sheep" because their lack of pronunciation skills. Therefore, they forget the words they learned during their courses in quick just before or after the exam . We can help students to memorize English words by creating visual and verbal memories instead of just visual memories.

MORPHOLOGY

Second, what about teaching morphology? Does students have to learn words that have the same root such as educate, education, educational, educator, etc.? Of course not. However, we ensure that students understand suffixes and prefixes.

abbreviator (noun in English) = kısaltıcı (noun in English)

abbreviating (noun in English) = kısaltma (noun in English)

See! When students know a English verb, it will be very easy to know all its deriviation. Additionally, nobody will translate the word "abbreviation" in English into the word "kısaltma" in Turkish because the equality of the word "abbreviating" is "kısaltma in Turkish.

ETYMOLOGY

We study etymology because we wonder the origin and history of words. Why do not we use this to create more memories when teaching vocabulary.

Do you know the word "transistor" in English? What does it mean actually? Yes, when you look at a dictionary, it says that transistor is a small electrical device, .... However, what does the word"transistor" actually mean?

It was first invited in 1947 and so called because it transfer an electrical current across a resistor and then the word transistor from transfer + resistor was coined by U.S. electrical engineer John Robinson Pierce.

Can you see the word "transistor" comes from the combination of words "transfer + resistor". When we teach this information to students, who can forget this word any more?
