From my point of view its supervision. This quality inculdes ability to supervise effectively.
This is an excellent question. I imagine that over the years the answer has changed. My sense - essential qualities include the ability to coach, the ability to ask questions and not always give answers, curiousity, generosity or willingness to share their experiences, insights and knowledge, patience, ability to hold students' accountable, the ability to build trust and establish credibility (versus assume they already exist), the ability to give constructive feedback, and the courage to stay out of the politics of graduate life. That's what comes to mind as I think of my own experience as a PhD student and having supervised students.
The qualities varies person to person. The most important issues are that they have to sincere, proactive, serious and responsible for their students works and progress. If they do not feel any importance regarding the students matter besides their academic works students would be demotivated and frustrated in accomplishing their works.

Additionally to the personal qualities, the good supervisor is who directs those investigation topics that he could investigate, but he doesn't have enough time to do it.
In my opinion, supportive mentality, conciousness about supervisee's progress,availability,interpersonal communication skills and ability of providing constructive feedback are notable.
