At some points in space the director of the molecules in nematic crystals is undefined which are called defects. Disclination line is one of the types. I find it difficult to understand what it actually means when we say that the director is undefined and how we create these defects using a process called Volterra Process. Also it will be helpful if anyone can provide me a reference for this.
