It is easy to go to epidemiological book to see how to plan a cohort study. The traditional design is not at issue nowadays (we do not have groups formed based on exposure), but many old problems are still unsolved, like problems of drop-out rates. What could be key issues for debate?

I see that many cohort studies follow the idea of exploratory cross-sectional studies: a) every wave has new variables, though in the same individuals from the previous waves; b) too many variables with no clear reason, but "promising" in data mining techniques. A common cross-road is: shall we take a population-based, representative sample, or a convenient sample we can follow with few drop-outs?
