Zealand mays (Poaceae) is grown as fodder crop by hydroponic system in India.
The other crops suitable to Indian conditions include Apium graveolens (Apiaceae), Allium cepa (Liliaceae), Raphanus sativus (Brassicaceae) and Citrullus vulgaris (Cucurbitaceae).
Lettuce, tomato, green leafy vegetables, strawberry, cucumber and capsicum are few very imp crops for Indian condition in Hydroponics/soilless cultivation
Potato is agreat success through aeroponics at Central Potato Research institute , Shimal, India. Amongst , perennial crops, citrus is a great success in countries like Australia, Argentina, USA, South Africa etc...
There are many crops which are suitable for growing in hydroponic system, as many of colleagues have described here. On the basis of my interaction with hydroponic growers the most suitable crops are lettuce, mustard for green leaves, mint for leaves, coriander for leaves, radish for leaves, amaranths for leaves, maize for fodder mat, strawberry for planting material production. Tomato, capsicum, chilli, cucumber set fruits but are not economical to produce in hydroponic system. Vegetative growth is favoured more in such systems of crop production. In conclusion we can say hydroponic system is suitable for leaf and vegetative part production which are ready for harvest within 15-25 days.
