Over several decades, there have been thousands and thousands of papers describing the use and development of chromatography and mass spectrometry. But if a "greatest hits" of classic papers was to be released for these approaches, which papers would you suggest to be in the collection?

Among the different segments that address these themes (mass spectrometry and chromatography) is necessary to know which of techniques and procedures that one wishes to evaluate the state of the art and prospects. In relation to research, development and prospects of mass spectrometry using quadrupole ICP-MS and reaction cells I suggest the following articles:

Hi Xinggui! I was merely asking the RG community to suggest papers they felt were classics in these fields. Thanks Rodrigo for the input, I for example hadn´t read the Houk paper before! Definitely a classic:)
Indeed, LC and MS are in many cases "just tools", e.g. simple routine work. However, a lot of research and inventiveness goes into (further) developing LC and MS, and (re-)reading pioneering papers can be a very rewarding excercise. And its fun to hear which papers have affected fellow researchers.
If you take chromatography and mass spectrometry separately, the "Moore & Stein" amino acid analyser of 1958 should be cited. The Nobel prize was particularly well deserved because essentially the same instrument is still in use. Apart from that was a brilliant implementation of one of a range of ion exchange techniques that had already played a major role in the isolation and characterisation of metabolites during several decades.
Oddly, ion exchange became a minority interest with the advent of HPLC and derivatives.

For Chromatography/MS, I would suggest the work of Dr. Fenn (another Nobel Prize winner), without him, there would not be an explosion of LC/MS market we currently have. He made the ESI a valuable tool of this decade.
Hi Narong, totally agree, and had to take a dive into the classics. Here is a link to Fenns first electrospray mass spec paper, and the first paper by Dole et al (1968!) on electrospraying macromolecules, prior to Faraday cage detection.
