Are there some unique advantages to preparation of hydrogels in a vacuum? Please comment on the different properties of same or different hydrogels with different preparation circumstances such as in the presence of microwave radiation, gamma radiation, air etc.
The free radical polymerization required for hydrogel formation is inhibited to a large extent by presence of oxygen, so usually the reaction is carried out in solution which is thoroughly purged by Nitrogen. If you do the polymerization in vacuum you will get the same effect. Microwave, UV or Gamma radiation provide energy for the polymerization, so they are important too. If you apply different frequency radiation for a certain time for polymerization of same material you may get different degrees of polymerization.
