It seems that the academic job search is becoming more precarious each year. What advice would you give PhD candidates and recent graduates who are entering the academic job market? Has the post-COVID-19 world impacted academic jobs, and if so, in what ways?
I have been looking in my sector as well and most of the positions require previous experience. Its' not clear what the universities want but insider news is to get some publication, gather teaching experience and have good networking to get into academia.
The question that remains is how much and what kinds of teaching experience, how many publications, and what kinds/tiers of publications are ideal for each field. It would also help to have an idea of good approaches for how to go about networking
For interviews, please dress professionally, even if the interview is virtual. Yes, we can tell, even from the shoulders up and it does make a difference as you are still making a first impression. I've been shocked at how many people wear very casual clothes for interviews. In your responses, include some detail about your soft skills. Be sure to ask relevant questions and don't ask questions that are simple answers found on their website, like the mission and vision of the organization. Ask questions that matter for you and how you may determine if they are a good fit for you to accept the job if offered. This may seem basic, but it is critical too.
