There are numbers of hydrogels swell and shrink in water. It is obvious that is a significant property for medical issues. Wonder, is there any curiosity for swelling materials in alcohols ?
A useful application for acrylate polymers in alcohol is to reduce strain on the polymer while it is being hydrated. I have attached a publication where this was done in EtOH. There may be several causes contributing to the reduced strain on the polymer during swelling (eg. diffusion, Van der Waals forces, etc). I have not seen a detailed thermodynamic description of the dynamic process so I can only provide hypothesizes into the governing phenomena; however, I have observed first hand reduced cracking of polymer disks during swelling when it is done by transitioning from an EtOH to water solution in incremental changes in the v/v% of the EtOH.
