It just came up during lecture, and it seems that even viruses have roles in nutrient cycle, which made me question whether an organism can be exempt from it or not.

All organisms can be part of a food chain. As producers, consumers and decomposers. Possibly in several roles. Consumers also contribute to decomposition via excretion, and decomposers can be food for other organisms. What goes out of the cycle is something that, for example, becomes sedimented or fossilized. For example peat, coal and oil.
