In Brazil, teenagers usually learn English taking private courses . Such courses have a cost and take up to 4 years until a student is considered fluent.

A member of this project works in a teenage Scholl with about 650 students. Every year the staff of the English school prepares different marketing strategies for all of the students of the School. We intend to prepare a form with suitable questions for the purpose of identifying potential students. It is known that about 70 % of the students already study English in private schools. So our idea is to use the forms of the students who already study English to generate different classification models, including Decision Trees, Fuzzy Decision Trees and Fuzzy Rule based Systems to pre-select students with most potential in order to focus marketing strategies for them..

Our idea is to ask students (about 650) to answer a form with questions that might indicate their interest in an English Course. With a classifier that ranks the students regarding their potential to register in an English school, it is possible fo focus on them instead of preparing a marketing campaign generic. A reduced set of potential students can be extracted using a decision tree quite easily and fast, which allows employees to focus on this reduced set of students with personal approaches and follow up calls.

Our problem: What questions to ask? Which questions are relevant to indicate the interest of a student in an English Course?

This way, I would like to ask you suggestions on questions that could identify who are the potential students and those who are not.

We deeply appreciate every single question you might share with us.

Some of the questions we are considering include:

  • Age
  • Household income
  • If one or both of their parents speak English
  • Does the student have the habit of reading books? How many per year?
  • Questions regarding the need to understand English to play games, understand music, and watch TV series.
  • The importance of fluency in English in their personal lives.
  • Please, feel free to suggest any questions and also suggestions on how to improve the inicial proposal .

Thank you so much for your generosity.

    Best wishes,
