Hi Gary, this is an awesome topic for stigma. Tattoos and scars were used to "mark" actors.
I would look at Goffman's original work "STIGMA" and particular the notion of the "wise" that have a relationship with those that are the targets of stigma. Tattoos are increasingly common and accepted by audiences so it will be interesting to see whether they have negative consequences in selection processes.
My own research is on how MMA actors overcame stigma associated with their practice to gain greater acceptance from audience evaluators. I've provided it below along with a few other papers on stigma. Great topic
