HI Tarif,

I think you are talking about the modal analysis of a system. You can represent any multi-DoF system as a combination of SDoF components using Modal Analysis. The pre-requisite condition is that your system should be LTI (Linear Time Invariant) system. The idea follows from the fact that if a system has multiple vibrational frequencies then there is a corresponding mode shape for each frequency.
