Recently I analyzed some of my vermicompost samples on Uv-vis spectrometer at different ratios i.e. 472 nm and 664 nm to calculate the humification index as Q4/6. However, the value of Q4/6 has increased with the number of days after composting. How does this affect the maturity of the vermicompost? As in most of the research papers, it is portrayed that the value of Q4/6 decreases with the increase in number of days after composting.
The Q4/6 humification index, measured using UV-Vis absorbance at 472 nm and 664 nm, usually decreases over time during composting, indicating an increase in complex, stable organic compounds. In your case, however, an increase in Q4/6 suggests that simpler, less decomposed organic materials are dominant, which may mean that the vermicompost is still maturing. Possible reasons for this include composting conditions (temperature, pH, moisture), the composition of the initial feedstock, microbial and earthworm activity, or variability in sample preparation and measurement.
To better assess maturity, you could compare these findings with additional indicators, such as the C/N ratio, pH, and microbial activity, and consider using other techniques like FTIR or fluorescence spectroscopy to verify organic matter composition and confirm the compost’s maturity stage.
