What are the different ways in which we can use a triangulation technique to assess the impact of Faculty Development Program on teachers and their teaching skills, in a medical school?
impact of Faculty Development Program on teachers and their teaching skills
Option 1: You could triangulate based on multiple perspectives.
- Level 1 Evaluation data (Kirkpatrick) the teacher self-assesses improved skill
- Level 2 Evaluation data, students are surveyed related to a specific construct (instructor feedback or problem-based learning).
- Level 3/4 Evaluation data, observers randomly sample teachers' classrooms to look for evidence of behavior change related to the program.
Option 2: You could triangulate based on the teacher as the source of data, but pull 3 different sources of data.
- 1. Teacher self-assessment pre-development program and post-development program (to analyze for their perception of growth).
- 2. Teacher product analysis: as a result of the professional development, perhaps the teacher is asked to revise a lesson plan and share it with colleagues. Randomly sample these lesson plans to look for evidence of applied concepts from training.
- 3. Teacher behavior: observe classroom behavior or survey students related to a specific construct.
Triangulation can consider a questionnaire, focus group discussions, journals, interviews, document analysis and other related instruments but these must be in accordance to your research objectives which should manage the volume of the data too.
