Should scholars with loose university affiliations present themselves as independent scholars or in connection with the university where the teach and/or research? What's the point in mentioning a university when all your research is done by yourself? On the other hand: does "independent scholar" sound too much like "has not make it yet"? Any ideas how one should represent oneself within the competitive world of academia?
I believe every scholar should be linked to an Institution.
This multilayered link will certainly enrich any work performed and facilitate the communication of results. Much of our scientific performance results from team work.
On the other hand, we all know some very valuable «Independent» researchers, that certainly bring value and credits to the scientific and academic community.
(On my behalf, I work hard as a medical practitioner, I teach daily at the University, and I also work as a researcher. All these parameters bring value to each other's performance, and I feel richer in scientific terms, though not in economic terms...)
Many scholars are onle loosely connected to a department (at least in Austria and Germany), they teach one or two courses and/or they get their research founded by grants etc. In many cases they don't even have an office at a university. nevertheless, they conduct research, publish and present their findings. My research and that of many colleagues in similar situations, is not defined by a local department, but by an international community, by specific academic societies and their conferences and journals.
