We all know publishing houses sending e-mails to everyone who has written a thesis or organized a congress. They offer to publish whatever it is and with no quality controll. Most of them have no distribution at all (besides their own websites and maybe amazon). Graduates and others often feel flattered by these offers. How can we deal with this? And how can we judge of a publisher is a proper or a questionable one?
