We work hard and often fail to motivate undergraduate students in research. Research internship scholarships or capstone requirement are key motivators. Can you share how you motivate your students in research?
Letting them choose their own research question is an excellent idea. Giving them ownership to the project is a great motivator. Thank you, Ian Kennedy !
Madhav - I encourage and supervise Honours students who, hopefully, then progress to their PhD programme. I have also co-written/edited several editions of a popular Australasian research text (the 6th edition is due March 2020). It is a well cited text and when I look at the citations I can see that a lot of them are part of supervised recent graduate Australasian research.
Dear Dr. Dean Whitehead , thank you for sharing your strategy and information about the 6th edition of your research text. As a faculty member with primarily teaching appointment, I have witnessed that the majority of our undergraduates would not know about graduate research opportunities or even if they know, they do not consider attending grad school for many reasons including immediate employment opportunities in the United States. Letting them know about the graduate programs, particularly encouraging honors to consider PhD research and publishing with them is outstanding motivator. I look forward to the new edition of your book.
Excellent mentoring tip, Dr. Mustafa A Adhab . Providing undergraduates with more hands-on type of research projects over theoretical research is a great idea. Thank you for sharing.
