Abstract

Picoeukaryotes constitute good models for testing photophysiological hypotheses because of constraints as well as opportunities related to their minute size. This study was undertaken to investigate the relation between growth rate and regulation of photosynthesis in a coastal picoeukaryote, using the strain Phaeomonas sp. RCC 503 as a model. Here we address how photoacclimation responses affect photosynthetic capacity and how growth rate is modulated by photoacclimation and photosynthetic rate variations. Growth of the strain was followed over 5 days under five sinusoidal light regimes set to peak at maximal photon flux densities (PFDs) of 10, 50, 100, 250 and 500 µmol photons m−2 s−1. We measured growth rate, pigment composition, variable fluorescence, non-photochemical quenching, electron transport rate, absorption spectrum, cell carbon and nitrogen content one to three times per day under each of these five conditions. Results suggest that Phaeomonas sp. RCC 503 is a light-adapted species, showing a high physiological plasticity allowing it to grow under a broad range of PFD conditions. The PFD determined the growth rate, the latter being correlated significantly to photosynthetic capacity. Biochemical properties of cells, in term of carbon and nitrogen content were closely correlated to growth rate and PFD. Photoacclimation allows growth to be maintained at low irradiance except at 10 µmol photons m−2 s−1, whereas photoprotection efficiency allows enhancement of growth at high PFDs.

The photosynthetic rate is measured at a well defined moment, while growth refers to a period in which it was observed or measured.

You cannot calculate or even estimate your body weight by what you eat at one specific day. Both parameters (body weight and eating habits) are often correlated. It is pre-programmed by your genetic disposition. If you eat by having fun, your body weight will remain in reasonable ranges. "enjoy your meal".

I think some of the main issues are:

*How photosynthetic rates are measured/calculated (at the leaf level on leaf area or weight basis; at the whole plant level; if it is measured at ambient or controlled environmental conditions; etc.) . This article might be of interest: http://www.publish.csiro.au/fp/FP05310.

*All these involve total leaf area, leaf ontogeny, leaf position or canopy layer (sun/shade leaf).

Photosynthesis rate doesn't always translate to growth, 

It may be due to various reasons 

Mainly  the metabolic state and the type of stress could be the reasons behind the variation.

It may be or it may not be the case. Photosynthesis and growth are surely linked but not linearly correlated. e.g. babies are growing for a while just with the mothers milk and older people may still eat a lot without growing at all. Only in stoichiometric reactions we have to do with strict proportions between substrate and products. Growth of an organism is a phenomenon which depends on many parameters. In many seldom cases (e.g. rate limiting conditions) it may appear for a short time, that e.g. growth or inhibition of growth is controlled by a single side-reaction. Weight, size and activity of the people in your surrounding are not linearly correlated at all and different from person to person. Any car has a different gasoline consumption per driven distance which even depends from the driver as well. However in applied science any comparison of a parameter A with a parameter B can practically be helpful and used, empirically, however only in an experimentally calibrated domain.

Keep in mind: In science you are allowed to do intellectually and write any thing you like,......but you have to say and to write what you did and how you did it. Good luck.

Dear all, it also depends on how you assess growth. Is this above ground change in biomass or total change in biomass (including below ground). Most often, above ground changes in biomass are used as a proxy for growth, but many species (especially during their period of establishment) invest most in roots and are apparently not growing above ground. This is particularly true for species in dry growing environments.

Perhaps you could try to look at the correlations between photosynthesis and growth by splitting the analysis for biomes or functional groups.
