The reason why he does this is because of the geopolitical location of Turkey being right next to Europe and it's closeness to the Middle East and many times the American and European countries need the help of Turkey by using bases there and by allowing the passage of troops and the use of their air-space all in the "supposed" war against Terror, Iraq etc etc.

Turkey belongs to two continents, its larger part is in Asia and smaller part in Europe. It is fully a connecting country in between Asia and Europe, that is why it is called in a brief name as "Eurasia".
