I have synthesized triethylene glycol coated cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. particle size is about 15 nm. when i tried to filter it, it wont work. I mean all the particles remain on 200nm filter paper, and only water filtered out, unlike other material like peg coated, dextran coated nanoparticles where one can obtain nano particles after filtering.
could anyone plz explain is there any attractive or adhesive force between paper and triethylene glycol or what, help would be appreciated. Thanks.
You have a collection of fused post and sub-micron aggregates much larger than the primary particle (? crystallite size by Scherrer?) size of 15 nm. Have a look at the attached:

In addition van der Waals forces will cause the particles to be attracted to the filter paper as well as to themselves and other surfaces.
In addition to the reasons given by Alan (aggregation of nanoparticles and Van der Waals forces of agglomerates with paper), the hydrogen bond of triethylene glycol with the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose from which the paper is made must be taken into account.
